Cultural Shock France & Lithuania
According to our research and feedback from students past years, we have identified some cultural shocks between France and Lithuania
- Social Interactions: Lithuanians are more reserved than the French. Silence is normal, and friendships take time but are deep and genuine.
- Punctuality: Being on time is essential in Lithuania, unlike the more relaxed French approach to schedules.
- Food Culture: Lithuanian meals are simpler and heartier (think potatoes and rye bread) and are eaten earlier, often around 6 PM.
- Weather: Winters are long and cold, we have to prepare for snow and invest in warm clothing.
France and Lithuania have some clear cultural differences based on Hofstede’s dimensions. France has a high power distance, meaning hierarchies and authority are more accepted. In Lithuania, people prefer equality and leaders are more approachable. On individualism, France is very focused on personal goals and independence, while Lithuania values family and community a bit more. Both countries like structure and clear rules (uncertainty avoidance), but this is stronger in France, where planning is very important. Finally, France is a more feminine culture, focusing on quality of life and balance, while Lithuania is slightly more masculine, valuing success and achievement. French students may find Lithuania more relaxed, community-focused, and flexible compared to their home country.
